Tom Boring
After graduating from David Douglas High School in Portland Tom attended Oregon State University, then the University of Oregon, earning a degree in General Science in 1964. Graduate school at Cal State Hayward, where he became an Assistant Professor of Chemistry, piqued his interest in pursuing a career in chemistry. He worked in the forest products industry and its suppliers for 35 years before retiring as a CEO.
Inspiration to become a metal sculptor came from seeing other works that were more conceptual than realistic. The goal was to create sculptures that actually resembled the true form. From a distance he wanted them to appear as a particular bird, fish, animal or familiar object and only on closer examination would the small parts in them be exposed.
His sculptures are made from at least 95% recycled metal and found objects. Using TIG welding with silicon/bronze rod, under 5x magnification, he welds each small piece to the next to eventually blend into its final form.
